Election Activity

Organize your own simulated voting activity

An important component of the 'Discover Democracy' presentation is the Elections Activity. This activity takes place in the middle of the presentation and provides students with an opportunity to put into practice the lessons they have just learned about democracy and voting, further enhancing their understanding of the voting process. During the Elections Activity, students will be presented with two hypothetical measures that could potentially impact their community. They will also be encouraged to consider arguments both in favor of and against each measure. Once the activity is completed, the ballots will be counted, and the results will be announced. This process will enable students to comprehend the influence they can have in their community, even though the election activity is simulated.

To conduct this activity, please download and make a copy of the ballot template provided below. Consider the specific issues that students may be encountering in their communities, and devise two hypothetical measures that address those issues. Once you have inserted the measures into your document, print ballots for each student. If you are presenting outside of a school classroom setting, you might also need to gather supplies like pencils or erasers to ensure that students can conveniently fill out the ballots.
